The Masked Turkey (Maske Kimsin Sen?)

TV Series · 2022 · 16 people

Maske Kimsin Sen? is a Turkish music competition in which well-known people sing on stage in costumes that hide them completely. Known internationally as The Masked Singer Turkey, it is the Turkish version of a format that began in South Korea as King of Mask Singer and was later adapted in many countries as Masked Singer. Produced by Medyapım, the show went on air on FOX with its first episode on January 1, 2022. Promotional copy presented it as a format ready to become a phenomenon in Turkey as elsewhere.

The formula is game-based: in each episode the contestants perform without revealing who they are, while the panel in the studio acts like a team of detectives, weighing clues to work out who is behind each mask. The contestant who receives the fewest audience votes takes off the mask and leaves the competition. The actor Tansel Öngel hosts, and the panel consists of Eda Ece, Melis Sezen, Alican Yücesoy and Doğu Demirkol. Metin Özülkü serves as music director.

The show did not last long. It ran for a single season of nine episodes and ended on February 12, 2022 with the ninth, going off the air after rumours of cancellation. While it was on, its concept drew criticism on social media and came under review by RTÜK.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

The fun of shows like this lies in gathering clues week after week and guessing who is behind the mask. Maske Kimsin Sen? hardly got the chance to build that up: with one season of nine episodes, it left the air before the chemistry between the host and the detective panel could settle. The formula is proven abroad and the game itself is simple and clear. For fans of the format it is a short, tidy archive; for anyone after a long-running binge, it is an experiment that ended too soon.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

At first glance it looks like a singing contest for the whole family: costumes, a stage and a guessing game. Kids may enjoy chasing the clues. But the show's concept drew criticism on social media and came under RTÜK review. So it is wise to check an episode before watching with little ones. For adults and teens, it is light entertainment.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Maske Kimsin Sen? shows how television formats travel: an idea born in South Korea as King of Mask Singer reached Turkey after being adapted in many countries. Its promotion promised it would become a phenomenon here too, but a format that works in one place does not necessarily land the same way in every viewing culture. In a television world where celebrities exist through their faces, hiding them completely is an intriguing reversal; how far that connected with local viewers remained an open question. The show can be read as a case of imported entertainment being tested against local expectations.
