Recep İvedik
Comedian Şahan Gökbakar plays the title role in the 2008 Turkish comedy Recep İvedik. He had created the character for his show Dikkat Şahan Çıkabilir, and its TV popularity led to the film. Its trailer drew about 5.75 million YouTube views by March 2008, and the film opened on 230 prints. In its first three days 791,536 people saw it, second on the list of Turkey's biggest three-day openings, and 3.15 million had seen it after 17 days. It was the most-watched Turkish film of 2008.
Recep, an ill-mannered man, takes a wallet back from a homeless man and, learning it belongs to a businessman in Antalya, drives south from Istanbul. He hands it to hotelier Muhsin Bey, but as he leaves he spots his childhood sweetheart Sibel (Fatma Toptaş) stepping off a tour bus. She does not remember him, so he decides to stay at the resort to win her over.
Togan Gökbakar directed from a script by Şahan Gökbakar and Serkan Altuniğne, with Özen Film and Aksoy Film producing. Shooting took place in Istanbul and Antalya. Some film people criticised its crude humour, yet it became the first entry in a series that continued with Recep İvedik 2 in 2009 and Recep İvedik 3 in 2010.
