The Charterhouse of Parma

The Charterhouse of Parma (La Chartreuse de Parme) is a 1948 French-Italian black-and-white historical drama directed by Christian-Jaque, adapted from Stendhal's 1839 novel of the same name. The cast is led by Gérard Philipe, Renée Faure and Maria Casarès. The production was shot at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome, with location work around Milan and Lake Como, and runs about 170 minutes. It competed at the 1948 Locarno International Film Festival, where it received an award for its cinematography, and went on to become the most successful French film of 1948 at the French box office.
