Demet Evgar — Biography

Demet Evgar was born on 19 May 1980 in Manisa; her father's side traces to Albanian roots, while her mother's family had left Thessaloniki as the Ottoman Empire was collapsing. After finishing the Theatre Department of Istanbul University State Conservatory, she formed the troupe Tiyatro Kılçık with classmates, and in later years she was involved with theatre ventures such as Pangar, Hata Yapım Atölyesi, Müşterek and Multi Arts Production.

Her stage work brought a string of honors: the play Gece Mevsimi earned her supporting actress prizes at both the Afife and Lions theatre awards, and playing Elise in Cimri brought her the title of actress of the year in 2010. She made her screen debut in the 2000 series Yedi Numara, then reached a much larger audience as Zeynep opposite Emre Karayel across eight seasons of 1 Kadın 1 Erkek.

On film she appeared in Güneşi Gördüm, Yahşi Batı and Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi, took a guest turn as Kara Fatma in Vatanım Sensin, and later led Avlu as Deniz. Her performance in Sofra Sırları won best actress honors at the Istanbul Film Festival, and a project marking Turkish cinema's hundredth anniversary named her one of the country's ten finest comedy actresses. She went on to play Cemre in Alev Alev and the title role in Bahar. The sister of director Yiğit Evgar, she serves as Turkey's UN Women goodwill ambassador.
