Osman Alkaş — Biography

Osman Alkaş helped establish Nicosia Municipal Theatre, where he still performs today, and Turkish Cypriots know him chiefly through the programme Torba and his performance in the film Sarmaşık. Born in Nicosia on November 3, 1955, he enrolled in the acting programme at Ankara State Conservatory in the 1973-74 academic year despite his mother's objections, graduated in 1976, and went home to Cyprus that year, performing under contract for the Turkish Cypriot State Theatre. Four years later he joined forces with Erol Refikoğlu, Işın Cem and Yaşar Ersoy to lay the foundations of Nicosia Municipal Theatre. Alongside producing programmes for Bayrak Radio, he broke into television with Tolgay Tarıman, and the pair later set up the channel Tempo TV; around the same period he both acted in and scripted the series Gimme 6 (2001). Playing Ekrem on the 2010 show Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman ki and Veli in that same year's film Gölgeler ve Suretler made him known in Türkiye; later in his career he appeared in Yabani, Bu Şehir Arkandan Gelecek, Bedel and Hayat Şarkısı, and in the films Sarmaşık (2015), Hükümet Kadın 2 (2013) and Uzun Hikâye (2012). His short film Babamın Arkadaşı brought him a Best Actor title at Narfest, while separate recognition in 2009 came as Satirigo Theatre's Achievement and Peace honor; he also serves as Culture and Art Coordinator for the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia. He played Orhan in Kalpazan (2024) and appeared in Confidente (2025). Though not married to fellow theatre actor Deniz Çakır, he calls her his "life partner."
