Shadows and Faces (Gölgeler ve Suretler)

Shadows and Faces is a 2010 Turkish drama film written and directed by Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Derviş Zaim. Set in Cyprus in 1963, when conflict between Turks and Greeks was beginning to escalate, it follows a young girl who is separated from her father, a Karagöz shadow-play master, and flees the burning villages toward the relative safety of the city — a journey that becomes a coming-of-age ordeal. Inspired by real events and framed by the hills and shores of the Karpaz region and the village of Büyükkonuk, the film asks how innocence can be preserved in a world ruled by violence.

The cast includes Buğra Gülsoy, Settar Tanrıöğen, Hazar Ergüçlü, Osman Alkaş and Popi Avraam. It is the third and final part of Zaim's trilogy on traditional Turkish arts, following Waiting for Heaven (miniature) and Dot (calligraphy), and centers on shadow puppetry. Shown in competition at the 47th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, it won Best Editing and the Turkish Film Critics Association Award there, before its nationwide Turkish release on March 11, 2011.
