North South (Kuzey Güney) (translated)

Kuzey Güney is a Turkish drama series written by Ece Yörenç and Melek Gençoğlu and produced by Ay Yapım. It premiered on Kanal D on September 7, 2011 and concluded on June 26, 2013 after 80 episodes across two seasons, airing on Wednesdays at 8 pm (moving to 10 pm from episode 61 onward). Loosely inspired by Irwin Shaw's novel "Rich Man, Poor Man," the story follows the sons of an Istanbul baker: the hot-tempered, rebellious Kuzey (Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ) and the calm, calculating Güney (Buğra Gülsoy). After a fatal accident one night, Kuzey takes the blame for a crime actually committed by his brother and is sent to prison; when he is released four years later, his relationship with both his brother and Cemre (Öykü Karayel), the woman they both love, has changed irrevocably.

The cast also included Zerrin Tekindor, Neslihan Yeldan and Mustafa Avkıran. Weaving together themes of class difference, family sacrifice and crime and punishment, the series was a major ratings success, holding a 7.8 audience score on TVmaze. It was sold to numerous countries, airing in the Arab world as "Avdet-i Muhanned," on Serbia's TV Pink, and in France first as "Frères rivaux" and later on Novelas TV and M6; a Mexican adaptation titled "Asignatura pendiente" was also produced. Kuzey Güney remains remembered as one of the most talked-about Turkish series of its era.
