Sema Keçik — Biography

Sema Keçik was born on October 4, 1965, in the Diyadin district of Ağrı and graduated in acting from the state conservatory of Mimar Sinan University. Invited to Vienna by Theater des Augenblicks, she took part in an international theatre-lab program studying body movement, voice and rhythm, and the Grotowski and Stanislavski methods; she also worked with Ariane Mnouchkine in Paris on Commedia dell'Arte and Balinese masks, and joined workshops on Kathakali dance in India with G. Venu.

She spent many years on stage with companies such as Kenter Tiyatrosu, the State Theatre, the Bakırköy Municipal Theatre and the Istanbul City Theatres before moving to television in 2009 as Düriye Bulut in the series Bir Bulut Olsam. She went on to play Daye Hatun in Muhteşem Yüzyıl (2011), Necmiye in Paşa Gönlüm (2014) and Meryem in Aşk Yeniden (2015); on film she appeared in Yazı Tura (2006) and Nefesim Kesilene Kadar (2015), and in 2017 played Möhteber in the series Yeni Gelin. IMDb records also credit her with a role in the 2024 series Asaf.

Keçik's husband was Ümit Karabel, a dancer with the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet; following his death on March 3, 2008, she has continued her life with their daughter, Ebru.
