Mixing thriller and drama with a streak of dark humour, the Turkish series 50m2 comes from Beşiktaş Kültür Merkezi, reached Netflix on 27 January 2021 and ran for a single season of eight episodes, each lasting around 45 minutes. It was released worldwide, including a German-dubbed version. Its central idea is that a second chance is easy to get but harder to make use of than one expects.

At its centre is Gölge, who remembers nothing of his childhood and works as a hitman doing the dirty business of Servet Nadir, the man who raised him. While tracing a photograph that links him to his past, he escapes with Servet's secrets and takes shelter in a 50-square-metre tailor's shop in a neighbourhood called Güzelce. The locals take him for Adem, the son of Adil, a tailor who has just died. Gölge starts living inside this false identity, and however tough the neighbourhood proves, he will change it just as it changes him.

Selçuk Aydemir directed and Burak Aksak wrote the script. Engin Öztürk, Aybüke Pusat and Cengiz Bozkurt lead the cast, which also includes Kürşat Alnıaçık, Tolga Tekin, Özgür Emre Yıldırım, Murat Kılıç, Gaye Gürsel, Yiğit Kirazcı, Tuncay Beyazıt and Gürkan Uygun.

50m2 is the kind of show you can finish in one sitting: eight episodes of about 45 minutes each. A hitman who remembers nothing of his childhood being mistaken for a just-deceased tailor's son and settling into a neighbourhood is a start both funny and touching. Engin Öztürk's Gölge slowly opens up beneath his hard shell, and Aybüke Pusat and Cengiz Bozkurt bring warmth to the neighbourhood. The residents of Güzelce are colourful too. The one drawback is that eight episodes are not enough for such a crowded neighbourhood; the show ends before you really get to know some of the side characters.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A hitman, stolen secrets and a boss who has him do the dirty work: 50m2 is set up like a full-on thriller. But the show steers it towards dark comedy and neighbourhood drama. The short episodes keep the pace up, and the eight episodes fly by. The neighbourhood story outweighs the gunplay, so pure action fans may be a bit surprised, but it is fun if you want a different mix.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

50m2 builds the classic mistaken-identity template on the fine line between neighbourhood comedy and crime thriller. Selçuk Aydemir's direction mostly keeps its balance as it shifts between tones, and Burak Aksak's script develops its idea, that a second chance is easy to find but hard to use well, without losing focus. Eight episodes at 45 minutes is the right measure for this story: unlike the habit of long episodes, there is little room for filler. The guarded presence Engin Öztürk brings to Gölge mirrors the character's emptiness well. Still, the mistaken-identity pattern is predictable in places, and the neighbourhood types sometimes edge into caricature. The traces of the Beşiktaş Kültür Merkezi comedy tradition are both a strength and a limit.
