Where the Fire Burns (Ateşin Düştüğü Yer)

Movie · 2012 · 3 people

Where the Fire Burns is a 2012 Turkish drama film written and directed by İsmail Güneş. The story follows Osman and his wife Hatice, a conservative couple with six children who work as laborers on a farm in Antalya. When their sixteen-year-old daughter Ayşe suddenly falls ill, they rush her to a state hospital with the help of a German couple, and she is taken into emergency heart surgery. During this process, it is revealed that Ayşe is three and a half months pregnant. While struggling to save their daughter's life, the family comes under the crushing weight of tradition, and parental love collides with the demand for an honor killing.

Inspired by a real honor killing, the film was made as the final part of a trilogy by the director. Hakan Karahan, Elifcan Ongurlar, and Yeşim Ceren Bozoğlu star in the leading roles. Released on May 4, 2012, the film was chosen as Turkey's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards, though it did not reach the final shortlist.
