Black Dogs Barking (Kara Köpekler Havlarken)

Black Dogs Barking (Kara Köpekler Havlarken) is a 2009 Turkish drama film directed by Mehmet Bahadır Er and co-directed by his wife Maryna Er Gorbach, with Er also writing and producing. The 88-minute feature marked the directors' debut, had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival, and opened nationwide in Turkey on March 19, 2010.

The story follows Selim, a naive young man who moved to Istanbul from Anatolia with his family and raises pigeons on the rooftops of his neighborhood. Together with his tough friend Çaça Celal, he runs a parking lot for a man they call the Master, dreaming of one day owning their own car park—until an offer from a man named Mehmet pulls them into the orbit of the mob. Praised for its inventive shooting style and authentic ear for the city's underground slang, the film collected awards at festivals in Antalya and Ankara, and its newcomer directors were even hailed as Turkey's answer to Martin Scorsese.
