The Crimean (Kırımlı)

Kırımlı is a 2014 Turkish-German co-production directed by Burak Arlıel, blending drama, history and war. Adapted from Cengiz Dağcı's 1956 novel The Terrible Years, it depicts the human tragedy of Crimean Tatar Turks held in German prisoner-of-war camps during World War II. The screenplay was written by Atilla Ünsal and Nil Güleç Ünsal, with Avni Özgürel producing; the film was made by TFT Yapım and distributed by Warner Bros.

The story follows Sadık Turan, born in Soviet-oppressed Crimea, who fights as an officer in the Red Army before being captured by the Germans. During his struggle to survive, he meets the Polish Maria, with whom he pursues the cause of liberating Crimea. Murat Yıldırım plays Sadık and Selma Ergeç plays Maria, alongside Ali Barkın, Bülent Alkış, Gülçin Santırcıoğlu and Burç Kümbetlioğlu. Featuring dialogue in Turkish, German and English, the 118-minute film was released on 12 December 2014.
