Revenge of the Snakes (Yılanların Öcü)
Yılanların Öcü (Revenge of the Snakes) is a 1962 Turkish realist drama directed by Metin Erksan, adapted from Fakir Baykurt's novel of the same name. The cast includes Fikret Hakan, Aliye Rona, Erol Taş and Kadir Savun.
Set in a small farming village, the story revolves around an unwanted pregnancy and the moral and social tensions it stirs within the community. Its frank portrayal of village life places it among the key works of Turkish social realism.
When the film opened on 23 April 1962, its Ankara screening was protested by certain groups, and initially it was cleared for exhibition only inside Turkey. Following an application by producer Nusret İkbal, a 1965 decision by the censorship board finally allowed the film to be shown abroad as well.
The novel was filmed again in 1985 with Fatma Girik and Kadir İnanır in the leading roles, and in 2014 it was adapted once more as a television series starring Ceyda Ateş and Hande Soral.
