Şevket Çoruh — Biography

The only child of a tailor mother and a minibus-driver father, Şevket Çoruh was born in Istanbul on 30 June 1973; his father's side traces to an Artvin family that fled Anaçlı village in Ardanuç after the 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War and settled in Muratlı, now submerged beneath the Ömerli Dam reservoir, while his mother's side, of Georgian and Laz background, lives in Sapanca. He was schooled in Üsküdar and Kartal before training as an actor at Müjdat Gezen's art center. Performing since 1989, he became known for the "Kokoreççi" character in an internet company's commercial and brought the Broadway record-holder one-man show Caveman to Turkey. He made his screen debut with Çiçek Taksi in 1995 and gained wide fame from 2006 playing Commissioner Mesut Güneri in Kanal D's series Arka Sokaklar, announcing the show's end himself in 2026 after a brief hiatus. He is also known for the films İnşaat, Eğreti Gelin, Usta and Aile Arasında, along with playing Gökhan across the Çakallarla Dans franchise. Selling cars and houses and taking out a bank loan, he opened Baba Sahne, his own theatre, in Kadıköy in 2017, where Müjdat Gezen passed him İsmail Dümbüllü's fes at the opening. His role in Bir Baba Hamlet brought him a 2018 comedy/musical prize from Tiyatro Dergisi and a special honour named for Haldun Dormen at the Afife Jale awards, and in 2020 Rasim Öztekin handed him the traditional kavuk. He was married to Günay Karacaoğlu from 1993 to 2004, then married Özge Turna in 2018, having a daughter from each marriage.
