Beyond the Sea

Beyond the Sea (Beyond the Sea – Musik war sein Leben)

Movie · 2004 · 15 people

Beyond the Sea, a biographical musical drama from 2004 inspired by the life of singer and actor Bobby Darin, takes its title from his song of the same name. Kevin Spacey stars and also directed, co-wrote and co-produced it, singing the musical numbers in his own voice. A German-American co-production shot in English, it runs 118 minutes.

The story begins with young Bobby, whose heart was damaged by childhood illness, clinging to life against the doctors' expectations. It follows his rise in music and film during the 1950s and 1960s and his marriage to the actress Sandra Dee, played by Kate Bosworth. John Goodman, Bob Hoskins and Brenda Blethyn also appear, as do the Turkish actors Tayfun Bademsoy and Orhan Güner.

The idea was not new: Barry Levinson planned a version as early as 1986 and began pre-production in early 1997. When he left the director's chair, the rights passed to Spacey and Darin's son Dodd. Filming ran from November 2003 to January 2004. The film premiered in Toronto in September 2004, opened in the United States on 17 December 2004 and reached Germany on 17 February 2005. Reviews were mixed and it disappointed at the box office, but Spacey was praised, largely for singing himself, and earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Here Kevin Spacey is director, co-writer, producer and star. That concentration turns the film into a passion project, but it also exposes the need for an outside eye, a brake. Singing the numbers in his own voice is the film's strongest card, sparing the musical sequences the artificiality of lip-syncing. The familiar trap of the musical biopic is here too: as a life's milestones from the 1950s into the 1960s are ticked off, dramatic tension can slip into the background. That explains the mixed reviews, and also why the Golden Globe nomination came mainly for the singing performance.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film opens a window onto American entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s, an era when records, cinema and fame were intertwined and a singer could be a film star at the same time. Bobby Darin's marriage to the actress Sandra Dee, in my view, captures the spirit of an age when celebrity couples lived in full public view. A young man with a heart damaged in childhood defying his doctors to reach the stage also fits neatly into the American dream narrative. A curious detail for Turkish viewers: the cast of this German-American co-production includes Tayfun Bademsoy and Orhan Güner.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

For a music-loving family it is not a bad pick. The songs are at the centre of the story, and a child clinging to life despite illness sends a good message. But the film is about an adult's career and marriage, and small children may find it long and slow at 118 minutes. Better suited to teenagers and grown-ups.
