A Dagger Fell into the Sea (Denize Hançer Düştü) (translated)
Denize Hançer Düştü (1992) is the feature debut of Mustafa Altıoklar, who also wrote and produced it; a drama made by Negatif Film.
The story follows Deniz and İpek, two actresses in the same theatre company, tracing their friendship and their efforts to keep their lives together. Their experiences unfold alongside rehearsals and the staging of Jean Genet's The Balcony, and the play's concerns with love, desire, sexuality and the hunger for power seep into the women's offstage world. The principal cast includes Yasemin Alkaya, Nur Sürer, Yaman Okay, Zühtü Erkan and Meral Çetinkaya.
On the festival circuit the film collected honours: Altıoklar was named Promising New Director at the 5th Ankara Film Festival in 1993, and cinematographer Uğur İçbak took the Best Cinematographer award at the 29th Golden Orange Film Festival.
