The Other Side of the Water (Suyun Öte Yanı) (translated)

Suyun Öte Yanı (The Other Side of the Water) is a 1991 Turkish political drama directed by Tomris Giritlioğlu, with a screenplay by Feride Çiçekoğlu and produced by TRT.

The story unfolds in the early 1980s, a period when people were imprisoned for their political beliefs. Ertan, a university lecturer released pending trial, travels with Nihal, the woman he loves, to the island of Cunda near Ayvalık. The woman who runs the guesthouse where they stay arrived from Crete in 1924 and settled on the island, and this friendship opens a journey into the past. When his trial ends with a prison sentence, Ertan returns to Cunda years later, this time alone.

Starring Nur Sürer and Uğur Polat, the film contrasts the oppressive climate of the era with personal feelings against the backdrop of the island. It was screened again in 2008 at the Flying Broom International Women's Film Festival.
