Journey of Hope (Umuda Yolculuk)
Journey of Hope (German: Reise der Hoffnung; English: Journey of Hope) is a 1990 drama film. A co-production between Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, it was directed and written by Xavier Koller. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990, representing Switzerland.
The film tells the story of a family living in a poor village in Eastern Anatolia who try to reach Switzerland, a country they only know from postcards, by illegal means. Setting out in hopes of a better future, the family traverses a perilous route through Greece and Italy to the Alps, braving rugged mountains, harsh weather conditions, and ruthless human traffickers. A tragic separation during a snowstorm brings their journey of hope to a heartbreaking end.
Necmettin Çobanoğlu and Nur Sürer star as the couple portraying the family; the cast also includes Yaman Okay, Erdal Merdan, and Mathias Gnädinger. The film's original music is by Jan Garbarek; it was produced by Peter-Christian Fueter and Alfi Sinniger.
