Innocence (Masumiyet) (translated)

Innocence (Masumiyet) is a 1997 Turkish drama written, directed and produced by Zeki Demirkubuz. Shot in only nineteen days, it collected four Golden Orange awards at the Antalya Film Festival and four more prizes at the Altın Koza Film Festival in the year of its release.

Yusuf leaves prison after serving time for an honour killing and hopes to build an honest life, yet drifts into aimlessness. At a shabby boarding house his path crosses with Uğur, a hardened prostitute, and Bekir, a man obsessively devoted to her, while Uğur's heart belongs to a man named Zagor. Accompanying them is Çilem, a deaf-mute little girl. As their fates intertwine, each pursues a personal idea of innocence, and the choices they make leave deep scars on them all.

Güven Kıraç plays Yusuf, Derya Alabora plays Uğur, and Haluk Bilginer gives a memorable performance as Bekir. In 2006 Demirkubuz revisited Uğur and Bekir's earlier lives in the prequel Kader.
