Killing the Shadows (Hacivat Karagöz Neden Öldürüldü?)

Why Were Hacivat and Karagöz Killed? is a 2005 historical comedy film written by Levent Kazak and directed by Ezel Akay. Based on the story of Hacivat and Karagöz, two legendary characters of Turkish shadow puppetry, the film is the first installment in Ezel Akay's "Anatolian Medieval Trilogy".

The film humorously depicts 13th and 14th-century Anatolia and the people of that era. Set against the backdrop of the struggle between the principalities and the Ilkhanids, the events blend real historical figures and events with a witty narrative. Filmed in Orhaneli district of Bursa, the production offers both an entertaining and thought-provoking perspective on the founding period of the Ottoman Empire.

The film stars Haluk Bilginer as Karagöz and Beyazıt Öztürk as Hacivat. Other cast members include Şebnem Dönmez, Güven Kıraç, Ayşen Gruda, and director Ezel Akay. The film won several awards, including Best Director, at the 13th Adana Golden Koza Film Festival.
