Manuçehr Vüsuk — Biography

Manouchehr Vossough was among the busiest actors of Iranian popular cinema before the 1979 revolution. He is said to have appeared in more than ninety films, worked as a regular of the Pars Film studio and occasionally produced as well. He spent the last decades of his life in exile in London, where he died.

He came to acting through sport and the stage. At school he was active in athletics, then performed in theatre around Saeed Qaim Maqami and with the Kaveh Theatre Group, including live plays for national television. His first film was Jahel-ha va Zhigul-ha in 1964, and he took his first leading part in Invisible Man. His real breakthrough was Charkh-E-Bazigar in 1968; early on his looks drew comparisons with Mohammad Ali Fardin, but he went on to establish a style of his own. Later parts included Eskandar Khan in Hossein Kord Shabestari, Borzoo in Virgin Woman, Shahbal in The Kiss on Bloody Lips, Masoud in Golnesa In Paris, Tufan in Kan Kardeşler and Feri in Feri Dast Ghashang.

He was abroad around the time of the revolution. He came back when called, but was barred from cinema and kept acting in the Lalezar theatres. After five years without work he left secretly through Pakistan for England, where he took part in Persian-language television entertainment in London. He died of cancer on 27 February 2022, aged 78.
