Almanya – Welcome to Germany (Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland)
Almanya: Welcome to Germany (Almanya is Turkish for Germany) is a 2011 German comedy-drama directed by Yasemin Şamdereli, who co-wrote the screenplay with her sister Nesrin Şamdereli. The sisters' feature film debut premiered at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win Best Script and the silver award for Best Film at the 2011 Deutscher Filmpreis.
The tragicomedy follows Hüseyin Yılmaz, a Turkish guest worker who arrived in Germany in the 1960s, and his family across several generations. When Hüseyin buys a house in Turkey intending to return for good, the decision sparks quarrels, reconciliations and unexpected events, dramatizing questions of identity and belonging. Released in German cinemas on 10 March 2011, the film drew about 1.5 million viewers, making it the fourth most successful German film of that year.
