The Spell (Büyü) (translated)

Movie · 2004–2005 · 6 people

Büyü (The Spell) is a 2004 Turkish horror-thriller film directed by Orhan Oğuz from a screenplay by Şafak Güçlü and Servet Aksoy, and it is counted among the first examples of the genre in Turkish cinema. Produced by UFP, the film was released in Turkey on December 17, 2004.

The story follows a team of archaeologists who travel to a remote Anatolian village for an excavation. A curse dating back seven hundred years, born when villagers killed their daughters believing they brought misfortune, is revived as the team searches for a manuscript belonging to the Artuqid King Sultan Salih, unleashing evil jinn upon them. Filming took place in the deserted village of Serenli, between Mardin's Savur and Diyarbakır's Çınar districts. The cast features İpek Tuzcuoğlu, Özgü Namal, Okan Yalabık and Ece Uslu. Although a surprise box office success, the film received poor reviews and made headlines when a fire broke out at its premiere on December 14, 2004.
