Kerem and Asli (Kerem İle Aslı) (translated)

Kerem İle Aslı is a 1971 color Turkish drama film directed and written by Orhan Elmas and produced by Uğur Film. Fatma Girik and Kadir İnanır star as the fated lovers, with Hayati Hamzaoğlu as the scheming Black Vizier.

Adapted from the celebrated folk tale, the story unfolds in a distant land whose Sultan has no heir. He hands power to his ambitious vizier and withdraws into seclusion. During a hunt, a white-bearded dervish promises both the Sultan and the chief blacksmith a son, on the condition that the Sultan never oppresses his people. The vizier, fearing the loss of his authority, drives the population to revolt so the Sultan breaks his word; as a result, a daughter is born to him instead. The Sultan conceals the truth, names the girl Aslan Bey, and raises her as a boy. Born on the same day as the blacksmith's son Kerem, the girl — whose true name is Aslı — grows up beside him without either knowing her identity. Unwilling to surrender power, the vizier plots against the two young people, turning their love into tragedy.
