Short Sharp Shock (Kısa ve Acısız)

Short Sharp Shock marked the feature filmmaking debut of Fatih Akın, who both wrote and directed the 1998 drama. Set among immigrant families in Hamburg's Altona district, the story follows a close circle of friends, of Turkish, Serbian and Greek background, whose paths start to diverge after one of them serves time in prison and decides to leave petty crime behind for a calmer life.

His attempt to change unsettles old loyalties and drives the group toward conflict. The picture is often cited as an early example of Akın's recurring interest in mixed ethnic communities and shifting identities, themes he would return to in later work. It earned nominations at Germany's national film awards and helped launch Akın's directing career.
