The Edge of Heaven (Yaşamın Kıyısında)

Movie · 2006 · 14 people

The Edge of Heaven (German: Auf der anderen Seite; Turkish: Yaşamın Kıyısında) is a 2007 German-Turkish-Italian drama written and directed by Fatih Akın. The second part of his "Love, Death and the Devil" trilogy, which began with Head-On (2004) and closed with The Cut (2014), it premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival before opening in Germany on 27 September and in Turkey on 26 October 2007.

Structured in three chapters, the film traces the intertwined fates of six people from two generations and three families—retired widower Ali, his partner Yeter, his son Nejat, Yeter's activist daughter Ayten, the German student Lotte and her mother Susanne—between Bremen, Istanbul and Trabzon, foregrounding parent-child bonds, migration and forgiveness. Starring Tuncel Kurtiz, Baki Davrak, Nurgül Yeşilçay, Nursel Köse, Patrycia Ziółkowska and Hanna Schygulla, it won Best Screenplay and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes, received the European Parliament's LUX Prize, and was Germany's submission for the foreign-language Oscar without reaching the final nominees.
