The Second Wife (Kuma) (translated)
Kuma is a 2012 Austrian drama film directed by Umut Dağ, who co-wrote the screenplay with Petra Ladinigg. Produced by Wega Film, it follows a Turkish immigrant family in Vienna through Turkish and German dialogue. Fatma, a mother of five diagnosed with cancer, personally selects the young Ayşe from Anatolia and brings her into the household as a second wife for her husband Mustafa, determined that her family will be cared for according to tradition should she die.
The film portrays the claustrophobic atmosphere of a family sealed off from the outside world, the clash of conflicting worldviews and the emotional strain of impossible expectations, all in a restrained style. Begüm Akkaya, Nihal Koldaş and Vedat Erincin star. Dağ's feature debut premiered on 9 February 2012 as the opening film of the Panorama section at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival, opening in Austria on 27 April 2012 and reaching Turkish cinemas in April 2013.
