Grbavica (Esma'nın Sırrı)

Movie · 2006 · 4 people

Esma's Secret (original title Grbavica) is the 2006 feature debut of Bosnian filmmaker Jasmila Žbanić, who wrote and directed it. An international co-production between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Germany, and Croatia with support from ZDF and Arte, the film takes its title both from a Sarajevo neighbourhood and from a word meaning "woman with a hump." It won the Golden Bear at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival and was Bosnia and Herzegovina's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Academy Awards.

Set in post-war Sarajevo, the film follows Esma, a single mother raising her twelve-year-old daughter Sara. When Sara's school trip requires proof that her father died as a war hero, a painful truth Esma has hidden for years is forced into the open. Through the eyes of mother and daughter, the film shows how everyday life remains shaped by the systematic violence inflicted on Bosniak women during the Bosnian War. Mirjana Karanović stars as Esma, with Luna Mijović as Sara.
