Jess Hahn — Biography

Jesse Beryle Hahn was born on 29 October 1921 in Terre Haute, Indiana. After serving with the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War, he settled in France in 1949 and took French citizenship. Trained originally as a musician, he gradually moved into acting, most often playing large, physically imposing gangsters or military men in French noir and western productions. Between 1952 and 1987 he appeared in ninety-three films, sharing the screen with stars such as Jean-Paul Belmondo, Lino Ventura and Bernard Blier. In 1962 he took the lead role in Éric Rohmer's French New Wave picture Sign of the Lion. Hahn died on 29 June 1998 in Saint-Malo, France.
