The Vow (Adak) (translated)

Adak (The Sacrifice) is a 1979 Turkish drama film directed and produced by Atıf Yılmaz. Başar Sabuncu adapted the screenplay from a true story by Faruk Erem; Yalçın Tura composed the music and İzzet Akay handled cinematography. Tarık Akan and Necla Nazır star, supported by Yaman Okay, Erol Keskin and Celile Toyon.

Poor villager Müslüm abducts his beloved Gülbahar and marries her, but hardship drives him to seek work in another city, where a theft of gold lands him in prison. A devout man, he vows to God that if his innocence is proven he will sacrifice his firstborn child; acquitted and back home, he finds his wife pregnant. Drawn from an event that occurred in 1962-64, the film portrays the superstition and religious customs of the Southeast with a documentary attitude, and was an innovative first in Turkish cinema for interjecting expert commentary on the events. It received Belated Golden Oranges for Best Screenplay and Best Actor from the cancelled 17th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.
