A Touch of Spice (Bir Tutam Baharat)
A Touch of Spice (original title: Politiki Kouzina) is a 2003 Greek-Turkish co-production written and directed by Tassos Boulmetis. Blending drama and comedy, it was chosen as Greece's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Academy Awards. Its Greek title carries a double meaning, readable as both "Istanbul cuisine" and "political cuisine" depending on the stress.
The story follows Fanis, who spends his childhood in Istanbul before being forced to emigrate to Athens with his family. From his grandfather Vassilis, a spice merchant who serves as both philosopher and mentor, he learns not only cooking but life itself. Thirty-five years later he returns to the city of his birth to face his past. Georges Corraface plays the adult Fanis, with Tamer Karadağlı as Mustafa and Başak Köklükaya also in the cast; the music is by Evanthia Reboutsika.
