Beyond the Hill (Tepenin Ardı)

Beyond the Hill is the first feature film written and directed by historian and film critic Emin Alper. The 2012 Turkish-Greek co-production was shot in the Ermenek district of Karaman and stars Tamer Levent, Reha Özcan, Mehmet Özgür, and Berk Hakman. Producers were Enis Kostepen and Seyfi Teoman, who passed away at a young age.

In the story, Nusret takes his two sons—one withdrawn, the other unruly—to their grandfather's farm, where old Faik complains about the shepherds whose goat herds roam nearby. A gunshot of unknown origin shatters the farm's peace. Built with a Western-like atmosphere and use of space, this tense family tragedy scrutinizes a dominant male culture that creates enemies and scapegoats instead of facing its own problems. The film won numerous awards, including the Caligari Prize in Berlin and the Golden Tulip and FIPRESCI awards in Istanbul.
