Murtaza
Orhan Kemal's novel of the same name received its first Yeşilçam adaptation in Murtaza, a Turkish drama shot in black and white in 1965. Tunç Başaran directed from a screenplay by Recep Ekicigil. It was made by Artist Film and produced by Eşref Ekicigil and Recep Ekicigil. Mengü Yeğin shot it and Turgut İnangiray edited; it runs about 101 minutes.
Müşfik Kenter plays Murtaza, a Rumelian immigrant and neighbourhood night watchman, proud of his shiny buttons, bandolier and whistle. He lets no thief slip past and scolds houses with lights on late. He lives in a poor shanty house with his wife Zümrüt (Ayfer Feray) and their children. The neighbours, worn down by his zeal, complain to the commissioner, who finds him a job as a control supervisor at a weaving factory. There his love of discipline turns the workers, and fellow supervisor Nuh, against him. At home, his eldest daughter Selma (Mine Sun) loves Ahmet (Tunç Oral), and Murtaza's rigid insistence on rules puts his family through a hard test.
Muammer Gözalan plays the commissioner and Mümtaz Ener plays Nuh. The film is a character portrait of honesty, duty and fanaticism seen through a poor 1960s neighbourhood and its factory.
