Either Independence or Death (Ya İstiklal Ya Ölüm) (translated)

Combining history with fiction, Ya İstiklal Ya Ölüm ("Independence or Death") ran on TRT 1 from March 16 to April 20, 2020, as a Turkish miniseries. Made by Kirli Kedi, it has twelve episodes in all, with the 11th and 12th shown together on the finale date. Its run fell a century after the events it depicts: it began on March 16, the anniversary of the occupation, and ended on April 20, three days before the anniversary of the assembly's opening.

The narrative begins on March 16, 1920, when Istanbul is occupied and the Ottoman parliament, the Meclis-i Mebûsan, is dissolved. It weaves together the Mim Mim Group's struggle in the occupied city, the Kuvâ-yi Milliye movement taking shape under Mustafa Kemal Pasha, and the process of setting up a new assembly in Ankara, ending with the opening on April 23, 1920. Rıza Kocaoğlu plays İhsan Pere, and the cast also includes Alina Boz, Dolunay Soysert, İlker Kızmaz and Mehmet Özgür.
