Hülya Avşar — Biography
Hülya Avşar was born on October 10, 1963, in the Edremit district of Balıkesir, the first child of a Kurdish father, Celal, and a Turkish mother, Emral. She attended Ankara Cumhuriyet Lisesi and stepped in front of the camera in 1982 in the TRT series İntibah. That same year she placed first in the Kâinat beauty contest, only for the title to be withdrawn once it came out that she was already married; the next year she launched her real screen career opposite Fikret Hakan and Salih Güney in the film Haram.
From the mid-1980s onward she took leading parts in numerous productions, among them Nefret, Kaptan, Tutku and Karanfilli Naciye, becoming one of the busiest film actresses of the era, and in 1993 she won Best Actress at the Moscow International Film Festival for Berlin in Berlin. A 2004 return to television in Kadın İsterse brought her back to wide attention, and she went on to play Safiye Sultan in Muhteşem Yüzyıl: Kösem in 2015 and Hale Ilgaz in Masumiyet in 2021.
After training in music, she put out her first record in 1988, and her 1995 album Yarası Saklım sold more than a million copies, becoming her best-selling release. She has edited a magazine bearing her own name, founded a clothing label, and runs the Hülya Cup tennis tournament. She spent years on the judging panel of Yetenek Sizsiniz Türkiye, has married twice, and has a daughter named Zehra.
