Directed by Orhan Elmas, the 1973 Turkish melodrama Dert Bende adapts Kerime Nadir's novel of the same name. Conservatory graduate Süreyya (Türkân Şoray) secretly loves Tarık, a naval officer who was once her sister Fatma's sweetheart. When Tarık leaves for training in America, Fatma decides to marry the wealthy Bülent and writes a farewell letter, but Süreyya never posts it and begins writing to Tarık in her sister's place. On his return the truth comes out, the lovers reunite, yet they have only a single day together before he departs for a military exercise and is reported dead. After a suicide attempt, Süreyya learns she is pregnant. Because Fatma cannot have children, the baby is registered as hers to save her marriage. Süreyya may only approach her son as his 'aunt,' endures years of longing, and devotes herself to orphaned children. In the finale she is named Mother of the Year, and the medal is pinned on her by her grown son.
